
Despite having a secular government, the role of feminism and women in popular Turkish culture have yet to be significantly explored. That being said, Turkish designer, Zeynep Fadillioglu has recently become the first women to design a Mosque in the country. After winning the commission to design the building, she even recruited several women to help with its construction and the results are breathtaking.Blending modern and contemporary design in the context of perhaps the most traditionally conservative religious context possible. As with all mosques, men and women worship on separate floors which has sometimes led to cramped space for women. Fadillioglu has addressed this issue by making the women´s floor equal in both size and beauty.
