That may be true, Muhammad answered, acknowledging that, so far, the armed Palestinian struggle had achieved very little. But, he said, eventually Islam will triumph over its enemies, and only armed struggle can bring about that victory.

And, in any event, he added, there can be no deal without the restoration of the lands and the homes in Israel that were taken from the Palestinians.

I can see why you would want those homes and that land, I replied, but there, too, don't you have to be willing to accept something short of your maximum demand in exchange for peace?

There have been a lot of injustices over the centuries, and most victims of those injustices have learned to move on, rather than sacrifice the present for a set of impossible demands and unrealizable expectations.

There can be no peace, Muhammad insisted, without our homes and land back.
