Ma'an – The municipal council of the city of Qalqilia in the northern West Bank has recently begun to build a new pool for hippopotamuses within the complex of the city's park and zoo.The old pool was too small for hippopotamuses, mainly aquatic animals, because it was designed originally for elephants, who do not need to submerge their whole bodies in water.
The director of the zoo told our reporter that the zionist Safari Park in Ramat Gan has agreed to send more than one hippopotamus when the new pool is ready. In the same regard, the Safari Park sent six deer to the Qalqilia zoo and will send 13 more soon.
The director of Qalqilia zoo said the municipal council hopes to obtain more wild animals such as lions, tigers, hyenas and snakes as part of efforts to improve the park as it is the only one of its kind in Occupied Palestine .The municipal council has recently prepared an area for the predatory animals and completed a museum devoted to the Canaanite era.
The Qalqilia zoo was devastated when the zionist military invaded Qalqilia in 2002 as a part of Operation Defensive Shield, killing many of the animals.their whole bodies in water.
