A national reconciliation conference aimed at bringing together the Palestinian political rivals Fatah and Hamas will take place in four cities across the Arab World on Tuesday.
Simultaneous sessions, organized by the Popular Committee for National Reconciliation, will be held in the occupied cities of Ramallah and Gaza , the Egyptian capital Cairo and the Qatari capital Doha.
The committee's independent chairman Dr Hassan Khreisha said that the Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa will attend the session in Ramallah and the Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem Al-Thani from Doha will also address the conference, demonstrating wider Arab support for the initiative and the efforts of the local committee
. The initiative proposes a two-sided solution. First is to call for the release of political prisoners on both sides and to agree on a program to work towards interim presidential and legislative elections. Second is to address security and the political system, in addition to reviving the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Around 200 people are expected to attend the Ramallah session and 800 will be at the Gaza Strip conference. While Palestinian figures from the diaspora are expected to participate in both the Cairo and Doha sessions. The Committee has previously organized popular marches in several cities in occupied Palestine to pressure the factions into returning to dialogue and end the bitter political division.
