Christmas threatened as Bethlehem faces financial crisis;
Mayor calls on PA to fullfill budget pledge
The city government of Bethlehem is facing a financial crisis because the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority (PA) has still not disbursed a grant approved in 2005, Bethlehem's mayor Victor Batarseh says.
Bethlehem's municipal employees have not yet received their salaries for October and November. The city's debts are threatening to put a damper on celebrations for Christmas and the Muslim holiday Eid Al-Adha, Mayor Victor Batarseh said.
Batarseh met with Bethlehem's three Fatah-affiliated members of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) on Saturday to ask them to pressure the government to immediately fulfill its obligation under a two million dollar grant which was approved more than two years ago by President Mahmoud Abbas.
In his meeting with PLC members Fuad Kukali, Isa Qaraqi, and Fayiz As-Saqa, Batarseh said that the municipality will be unable to pay its employees until the grant is disbursed.
