Nafha Association: zionist occupiers issued 183 administrative detention orders in May

The media department of the Nafha Association for Defending Prisoners and Human Rights said on Sunday that zionist occupiers issued 183 administrative detention orders against Palestinians during May 2008.

The orders imposed detention periods ranging from two to six months, and included both extensions of existing detention orders and first-time orders for recently detained prisoners. Palestinians in "zionist administrative detention" are held without charges or trial for renewable terms, and neither they nor their lawyers are permitted to know the evidence against them.

Amongst those whose administrative detention was extended was Walid Khalid, director of the 'Palestine' newspaper in the West Bank. He has been detained in the Ramleh prison since 18 May 2007, and his detention period has been extended three times.

The detention periods of Sheikh Mahir Al-Kharraz and Sheikh Tayseer 'Umran from Nablus were also extended, as well as that of the deputy mayor of Nablus, Mahdi Al-Hanbali. Two lecturers at An-Najah National University in Nablus, Dr Khadir As-Sadda and Dr Ghassan Thuqan, also had their detention orders extended.

The "administrative detention" of Samir Al-Masalma from the village of Beit 'Awwa in the Hebron district of the West Bank was extended for the ninth consecutive time.

The Nafha Association reported that during May 2008, 22 prisoners from the Hebron district had their detention orders extended; 12 from the Nablus district; five from the Tulkarem district; 13 from the Ramallah district; nine from the Jenin district; and six from the Bethlehem district.
